SOUTH Fremantle bounced back impressive to record a 21-point WAFL preliminary final win over West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday to book a spot in the Grand Final a week later also on home turf.

South Fremantle came out determined to rebound from the previous week's second semi-final loss to Claremont but the Bulldogs also never knew it would be easy up against the Falcons with a Grand Final spot on the line.

But South Fremantle kicked the last two goals of the first half and the first four of the second and that run of six consecutive goals set the stage for the eventual 11.5 (71) to 7.8 (50) victory in front of more than 5000 fans at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

AS I sit down to write this, Sunday's preliminary final is getting closer and I think myself and the boys are ready for a big game. I'm looking forward to it and looking forward to the challenge, and to having a win at the end of the day.

We have been here before and we were in the same position last year. Last week was obviously disappointing but Claremont played very well and we played very poorly. We try to erase that now and get back to what we think works for us, or what was working earlier in the year anyway.

We just put that down to a poor game from us last week. We had been struggling a little bit for form the past month as well and we just haven’t been playing the way that we want to play, but I think we've addressed that at training this week. We had a really good session on track on Thursday night in our main session, and then again on Friday everyone was up and about, and now we all can't wait for Sunday's game. You'll see a different South Fremantle team than you did last week.

SOUTH Fremantle is still in the same position it was a week ago needing a win on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to move into the 2020 Grand Final, only this time it's in the preliminary final against West Perth.

South Fremantle earned the right to play at home throughout the finals series by finishing on top of the ladder and claiming the minor premiership so no matter the result of last week's second semi-final, they would either play at home again next.

It turns out it's now in the preliminary final this Sunday with a spot in the Grand Final next Sunday also at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on the line against Claremont.

THERE is no panic at South Fremantle with the knowledge they are still just two wins from a premiership in 2020, but starting games better is a major focus coming into the preliminary final according to captain Dylan Main.

South Fremantle was the standout team during the nine rounds of the 2020 WAFL season winning its opening seven matches to secure the Bulldogs the minor premiership for the first time since 2009.

The Bulldogs had finished in second spot in each of the last four seasons behind Subiaco ending up in three preliminary final and a Grand Final appearance, so it was a step forward during the home and away season.

QUESTION: Obviously a disappointing performance, what's your initial reaction straight after the game?
ANSWER: I just thought we were outplayed. They were better than us absolutely, they were harder at the footy, got more numbers to the ball and we watched a bit. We were beaten in all facets but the midfield really taught us a lesson and you can't win games getting it inside-50 only 20 times. We have a bit to work through.

Q: You won't win many games with a scoreless first half but I'm not sure it was really the fault of the forwards, they just didn’t see much of it?
A: We felt like every time we got it fought we felt like we were relatively dangerous, we just never really got it forward. We had two really good chances early that were after pretty clean ball movement but we missed them both. From there we really struggled but we've been better than that all year. We'll just recover first and then prepare for next week.

YOU work so hard to earn the finals double chance for a reason and before Sunday, South Fremantle had to win two finals to claim the 2020 WAFL premiership and that's still the case even after a disappointing second semi-final loss to Claremont.

South Fremantle finished the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season on top of the ladder after winning the opening seven matches to not only earn the finals double chance, but also to ensure they will play the rest of the season at home at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

SOUTH Fremantle has the chance to book in a WAFL Grand Final spot at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with a victory against Claremont in Sunday's second semi-final at the same venue.

The second semi-final will then take place at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with South Fremantle attempting to reach its second straight Grand Final while Claremont is trying to get to its first since winning the premiership in 2012.

MASON Shaw has been remarkably consistent as a reliable goalkicker for South Fremantle ever since returning from Port Adelaide and he's been rewarded in 2020 by winning the Bernie Naylor Medal as the WAFL's leading goal scorer.

Shaw returned to South Fremantle following his time in the AFL system at Port Adelaide back in 2016, and while he initially shared a role in a star-studded forward-line and now is the main spearhead, his goalkicking ability has been remarkably consistent no matter the situation.

Shaw kicked another two goals on Saturday night against Perth at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park to give him 23 goals in eight matches for the shortened 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season.

QUESTION: How do you feel coming out of that game, they dominated the last quarter and you just couldn’t get out of their forward-line?
ANSWER: Obviously we had some different personnel with young guys down there but we couldn’t get our hands on the ball even around the middle. We didn’t use the ball that well either. We kept kicking it back to their numbers which is what they wanted. We didn’t use the ball well enough.

Q: Against a team with so much to play for, were you reasonably happy with what you did for the first three quarters?
A: We did some stuff right but it felt like we were always chasing our tails a bit, and shuffling the deck chairs a bit. You couldn’t question the effort and I think the boys really tried hard, but just at times during the day we lost the composure with the ball and they scored.
