District Centre of Excellence

The Centre of Excellence is the foundation for the WAFL’s future and a key to the ongoing development of our great game in Western Australia. The aim is to ensure all players coming through the WA development system have exposure to opportunities that maximise their potential.

This initiative aims to deliver:

Higher quality WAFL players
Greater number of draftable players to the AFL
Highest standard of coaching and support staff
Higher quality of community level players
Higher quality of educated parents for future generations

The concept of WAFL Clubs as a “Centre of Excellence” for the District is the foundation of future growth and prosperity. It has been endorsed by the AFL, WAFC and all WAFL Boards. This model will continue to grow the game in Western Australia and find a synergy between the WAFL Club and its District.

NAB Auskick

The NAB AFL Auskick program provides boys and girls with a fun and safe Australian Football experience that serves as an introduction to a lifetime of involvement in the game. The program is not just about introducing children to Australian Football – it activates and develops within each child the desire for a healthy lifestyle and an association with our great game. This is achieved through activities and programs for individuals, small groups and teams, and aims to assist development of personal and social skills.

NAB AFL Auskick is a program managed by the local community for the community. Adults play an essential role, whether as parents, coaches, administrators or officials, in supporting junior football in Australia.

Children learn best by example. Therefore codes of conduct provide clear behavioural guidelines and promote a quality environment in which both the game and the participants can flourish.

Code of conduct – Parents and spectators

Encourage children to participate regardless of ability

Encourage participants to always play by the rules

Never ridicule mistakes or losses

Remember that participants learn best by example. Applaud good play by all teams

Never publicly disagree with officials. If you disagree, raise the issue privately through appropriate channels

Actively discourage racial abuse

Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches

Remember that participants play for fun and are not miniature professionals

Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players

Encourage players to accept the umpire's decisions

Demonstrate exemplary behaviour by not using foul language, or harassing players, coaches or officials

Smoking and the consumption of alcohol is unacceptable at junior sport

Code of conduct – Coaches and teachers

Be reasonable in your demands: consider young players' time, energy and enthusiasm levels

Avoid over-playing the talented players. The just 'average' players' need and deserve equal time. n Keep winning in perspective: maximise participation because children participate for fun and enjoyment

Stress safety: ensure that equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate for age and ability levels

Consider maturity levels: match up practice schedules, activities and degree of competition

Develop team respect: for opponents as well as for the judgement of officials and opposing coaches

Recognise the importance of injury: seek and follow the physician's advice concerning injured players

Keep informed: with sound principles of coaching and skill development, and development of children

Teach sporting behaviour: create opportunities to teach appropriate sports behaviour as well as basic skills

Get priorities right: ensure skill learning and appropriate behaviour are the priority over competition

Teach fair play: help children understand the responsibilities and implications of their freedom to choose between fair and unfair play

Future Bulldogs Shine Under Lights

The annual South Fremantle District Youth Skills and Drills clinic was once again a success, with our keen future stars turning out to receive some expert tuition from league coach Paul Hasleby, assistant coaches Tony Walters and Scott Thornton and Fremantle Dockers Community Manager David Crute.

Under lights at Fremantle Oval the player were put through their paces in game sense, defensive work, running and agility and kicking remediation. Sessions lasted for 40 minutes each meaning the players were receiving intense training on a particular discipline. By the end of the 2 ½ hour session the players were definitely feeling every minute!

The players received a unique training singlet and training bag to use back at their junior clubs that featured the distinct bulldog symbol of the WAFL club and district. The coaches were impressed with the calibre of the players coming through and their dedication to getting something ‘more’ out of their footy by attending these one of a kind clinics. The high level of coaching and drills were lapped up by the kids who tried their hardest to master the advanced training – with fantastic results.

All in all it was successful night with some tired and happy players heading home - and some tired coaches too!

Club: Armadale Football Club

Years of Service: 32

Role Undertaken: Club Committee Member

Beryl has given 32 consecutive years of volunteering for football at a number of levels. In 2011 Beryl was a committee member at the Armadale Football Club, as well as working at the canteen on game day.

In the past years she has filled positions such as secreatry, treasurer and social committee member as well as any other required roles that were necessary.

32 years consecutive years of service to football earnt Beryl a well deserved spot as a finalist in the 2011 WA Football Volunteer of the Year.
