Tradition
The South Fremantle Football Club has a long and rich tradition from the first premiership in 1916 to the celebrations of 100 years of football in April 2000. On Field
The South Fremantle Football Club is without doubt one of the oldest and proudest clubs not only in Western Australia but also Australia. The South Fremantle Football Club has a contingent of experienced players led by 246 game captain Marty Atkins and some of the most exciting young talent coming through to senior ranks that the club has seen in the last 10 years. Evidence of this can be clearly seen with nine players being drafted from the South Fremantle Football Club in the past two years including four in the 2001 November draft.
The South Fremantle Football Club sets a high standard for on field and off field achievements seeing finals football as a minimum requirement each year for all it's teams.
The South Fremantle Guernsey is made up of an away strip (all red with a white v) and a home strip (all white with a red v)
Fitness
The South Fremantle Football Club takes the health of it's players extremely seriously. All players are required to have top hospital and ancillaries cover. The South Fremantle Football Club the covers 100% of all medical gaps incurred, one if not the only WAFL club to have this policy.
The South Fremantle Football Club has without doubt some of the best facilities in the WAFL competition. Based in the heart of Fremantle it's home ground is Fremantle Oval. South Fremantle Football Club shares it's ground with the Fremantle Dockers. Along with Fremantle's new state of the art facilities, the South Fremantle Club compliments these with our already impressive gymnasium, change rooms (including sauna), medical and treatment room. The club has it's own Doctor, Fitness Adviser, Rehab Officer, training staff of eight including masseurs, Physiotherapist and boxing coach.
The Fremantle Dockers Connection
Since the Dockers inception in 1995 they have been housed at South Fremantle Football CLub's home ground this being Fremantle Oval. Season 2000 has seen the Dockers build a state of the art training facility which includes an indoor heated pool, gymnasium and full rehabilitation facilities, these are also available at selected times to South Fremantle players.
The South Fremantle Football Club shares an excellent relationship with the Dockers. Currently the South Fremantle Football Club provides the Dockers' South Fremantle recruits with a home to play at when they have not been selected for AFL duties. This has seen the South Fremantle Football Club average approximately 3 players each weekend from Fremantle and the West Coast Eagles combined.
The Aboriginal Connection
No club in Australia can boast having so many talented Aboriginal footballers pass through it's ranks. The first family to make an impact on the football scene were the Hayward brothers Bill, Eric and Maley in the 1936-1937 seasons.
But the man to open the floodgates that heralded a new era of Aboriginal influence at the club came down from Darwin in 1972 one, Sebastian Rioli. In relatively quick succession over the next decade some of the greatest names in the club's history arrived including; Basil Campbell, Mr Magic Maurice Rioli, dual Sandover Medalist Stephen Michael, the talented Benny Vigona, Wally Matera, Willy Roe, Nicky Winmar and Brad Collard. And it didn't stop there as further members of the Rioli, Matera, Campbell, Michael and Collard families soon left their mark as the McGrath brothers are doing today.
Sixty one aboriginal footballers have played in excess of 2250 league games for the Bulldogs. There have been four All Australians, winning between them two Sandover Medals, two Norm Smith Medals, four Simpson Medals, one Tassie Medal and numerous fairest and best awards.
Stephen Michael holds the record for playing 210 games in succession from 1975 to 1983, a rare feat. He also polled 37 Sandover Medal votes in 1981 beating South Fremantle's Frank "Scranno' Jenkins, record total of 34 in 1937
