Beeliar Primary School teacher Nicole Hughes was named as a finalist in the West Australian Football Commission’s 2007 AFL School Ambassador-of-the-Year awards.
Beeliar Primary School teacher Nicole Hughes was named as a finalist in the West Australian Football Commission’s 2007 AFL School Ambassador-of-the-Year awards. Ms Hughes, from the South Fremantle District, was nominated in the primary school category. The AFL School Ambassador Program, now in its fourth year, aims to reward teachers who strongly promote football in their school and community. The program has been a huge success with the 500th ambassador named earlier this year. There are now more than 640 AFL School Ambassadors across WA. More than 100 people were present on Wednesday, August 15 to see physical education specialist Robyn Brierley named State winner for her work at Girrawheen Primary School. She won a trip to the AFL grand final, courtesy of Alinta and the Fremantle Football Club. In the other categories recognised on the night Hillman Primary School teacher Rod Graham was named the WA Primary School AFL Ambassador-of-the-Year, while Jonathan Grullis of Lake Joondalup Baptist College was recognised as the WA High School Ambassador-of-the-Year. Both men will be off to the first week of the AFL finals at the MCG courtesy of the AFL and West Australian Football Commission. Ms Hughes moved to Beeliar Primary this year and has had a big impact on football in a school that shares its ovals with the biggest soccer club south of the river. She was instrumental in promoting the district’s first ever all-girls NAB AFL Auskick centre, and attended every session to help coach the girls involved after school. She coached the school’s Eagles Cup team to a division win and is also involved in the after school Auskick centre this term. Ms Hughes also captains the Melville Sharks women’s football team.
