The Bulldogs Reserves have won their way through to the Grand Final and the opportunity to play for the 2009 premiership with a convincing 39 point win over East Fremantle at Fremantle Oval last Saturday. With nearly a full squad to choose from there was great competition for places in the side and training had been at a very high standard leading up to the game. The players took a while to settle in the first quarter and although we were winning our share of the ball, we were wasteful when going forward and turnovers cost us vital goals. At quarter time the margin was four goals in favour of the Sharks.
To the players’ credit they did not panic and began to regain control of the contest midway through the second quarter. The midfield dominated at the stoppages and the forwards looked lively, slamming on seven goals to none to open up a three goal lead at the long break. The tempo increased again immediately after half time as we slammed on three goals in three minutes to blow the game open. From that point we maintained control and looked comfortable as we marched into the Grand Final full of confidence.
There were many good players across the ground, with Sam Fielding and Luke Bairstow gaining many contested possessions. Leigh Kelly provided a huge physical presence at the stoppages and Cory Amato dictated play from half back. Brent Hall returned to his powerful best while Nathan Phillips again contributed four goals from half forward.
While they are very pleased to have reached the Grand Final, the players are acutely aware that the real work starts now. They have achieved an opportunity only – it is now up to them to make the most of it and begin a huge day for the club in winning style. A feature of the Reserves’ play this year has been their consistency, over four quarters and over the season. They are now setting themselves four the most important four quarters they will play.
The Reserves Grand Final starts at 10:30am on Sunday September 20th, so put on your red and white, and get along to Subiaco Oval early to support the boys. They have represented our club with professionalism all year, and they would appreciate your support on the big day.
Finally, spare a thought for the many players who will miss out on playing in a Grand Final in two weeks. With only three injuries in the entire senior squad, some very good players will unfortunately miss out. These guys need to know that they have been – and are – every bit as important to our success as those who are lucky enough to take to the field.
