One of the truly great players of South Fremantle, Basil Campbell was given the soul destroying news in early 1978 that after shattering his knee cap that football would certainly be a thing of the past.  The big, tough footballer who had so neatly disposed of Victorian bad-guy Don Scott in the historic State- of – Origin match at the end of the 1977 season was not one to accept defeat so easily. It is history now that the naturally lazy footballer with exquisite skills and one who had to be cajoled into doing every little bit of hard work began an unrelenting campaign to strengthen his knee. He trained at a pace previously thought impossible; he slaved, sweated and strived to get on top of the injury and his dedication and application finally paid off when by the start of the 1979 season he was one of the stars on the track. Instead if taking the easy way out and simply quitting “Big Bad Basil” triumphed over adversity and became one of South Fremantle’s and coach Malcolm Brown’s favourite players.
