There’s American Tough, and then There’s Aussie Tough

Growing up in America, I spent a lot of time around the game of football; also known as “gridiron”. I had my first football before I came out of my mum’s womb. It’s a sport I grew up watching on television and played with my friends in the front yard. Every Friday night I would go and watch my Dad’s team play, every Saturday I would wake up early to go watch the uni team play, and every Sunday I’d get up and watch the professionals on the television. I would go to school on Monday anxiously waiting for Friday and more football.

Alan Miguel played his first game of league football for South Fremantle in 1932 the same year the 22 year old Ron Doig assumed the dual responsibilities of captain and coach and died as a result of a hard knock tot he head in a bruising semi final loss to East Perth. Seventy eight years after his debut Allan Miguel resides at Braemar House in East Fremantle. On Saturday 7 August 2010 Allan turned 100 and he is to the best of our knowledge the club’s oldest surviving league player.
